No matter how basic the design, it is impossible for any two ponds to be exactly alike.  However,  the fundamental steps in the construction process are relatively similar.  As an informative guide, the standard steps involved in constructing a pond are outlined below.  

Flag off the outside perimeters of the pond and make any changes necessary to insure that all specifications have been properly addressed.
Scrape off the layer of topsoil located inside the pond area and push it into piles for re-use during the final landscaping phase of the project.  Cut out a defined edge around the outer boundries of the pond using an excavator.

Layer by layer, the excess soil is cut out of the ground and then pushed into large piles.  An excavator scoops up the excess dirt and places it into dump trucks for removal or relocation on the property.
Using a huge metal bucket with teeth attachments, the excavators sculpts out the interior design of the pond to the desired depths and dimensions.
The details that make each pond unique start to take shape.  Section by section, the walls of the pond are sloped and the bottom groomed in preperation for the final steps in the construction process.
Measurements are taken to insure a level elevation across the entire top edge of the pond.  An overflow drainage system is installed and a layer of hard clay is used to line the pond and prevent water leakage from occurig.
Deep trenches can be dug out to enhance the reproduction process and growth potential of your fish population.
Observe how manicured the pond's surface looks once the clay lining has been installed and the final grade completed.  The only thing left to do to this pond is add water.
